We’re delighted to be launching one of the first tailored, structured and research-based Long COVID programmes available in the UK Physiotherapy sector.

At APPI we pride ourselves on being on the forefront of ‘movement medicine’ – and as such see the enormous benefit we can provide to people suffering from the long-term effects of this virus. COVID-19 hit the UK in a huge way, affecting hundreds of thousands of people over the last year – as well as leaving many people with ongoing side effects that need a structured programme to allow for full recovery.

The long-term effects of the virus include breathlessness, rapid heart rate, brain fog, fatigue and movement soreness. Our programme is designed to address these in a tailored and structured way – to allow you the optimum recovery in the shortest time frame.

What is Long COVID?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. The health watchdog NICE defines Long COVID as lasting for more than 12 weeks, although others consider symptoms that last more than 8 weeks to be Long COVID.

Research suggests around one in five people who test positive for COVID-19 have symptoms for 5 weeks or longer. For around one in ten people, they last 12 weeks or longer.

What are the signs and symptoms?

The most commonly reported ongoing symptoms – regardless of hospitalisation status are:
•    fatigue
•    muscle ache
•    shortness of breath
•    headache
•    heart palpitation
•    chest pains
•    brain fog
•    anxiety and depression

What is the APPI Long COVID programme?

The APPI Long COVID programme is 6 weeks of 2 sessions a week. The sessions will start with a 25-minute class – gradually increasing by 5 minutes a week so we can make sure you’re progressing correctly through the stages of the recovery. Along the way you’ll have a series of daily exercises to do, with additional videos to support you outside of classes.

In the first few weeks we’ll also incorporate a ‘chat’ feature at the end of sessions. We’ll all get to know each other and share our stories and ideas – creating a sense of community as we all work through the challenges left by the virus as a group.
