The APPI Long COVID rehabilitation programme
We’re delighted to be launching one of the first tailored, structured and research-based Long COVID programmes available in the UK Physiotherapy sector.
At APPI we pride ourselves on being on the forefront of ‘movement medicine’ – and as such see the enormous benefit we can provide to people suffering from the long-term effects of this virus. COVID-19 hit the UK in a huge way, affecting hundreds of thousands of people over the last year – as well as leaving many people with ongoing side effects that need a structured programme to allow for full recovery.
The long-term effects of the virus include breathlessness, rapid heart rate, brain fog, fatigue and movement soreness. Our programme is designed to address these in a tailored and structured way – to allow you the optimum recovery in the shortest time frame.
Enrolments are now open for our Programme beginning April 6th.
What is Long COVID?
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. The health watchdog NICE defines Long COVID as lasting for more than 12 weeks, although others consider symptoms that last more than 8 weeks to be Long COVID.
Research suggests around one in five people who test positive for COVID-19 have symptoms for 5 weeks or longer. For around one in ten people, they last 12 weeks or longer.
What are the signs and symptoms?
The most commonly reported ongoing symptoms – regardless of hospitalisation status are:
- muscle ache
- shortness of breath
- heart palpitation
- chest pains
- brain fog
- anxiety and depression
What can we do about them?
Thankfully there’s a great deal we can do to combat these signs and symptoms. In this unique programme we’ll begin slowly and cautiously to allow you the chance to fully understand how we can address these areas for you. Before you even start the programme you’ll have a few short videos to watch to further understand how it all works and how it will benefit you.
The programme includes:
- breathing exercises
- aerobic-based work
What is the APPI Long COVID programme?
The APPI Long COVID programme is 6 weeks of 2 sessions a week. The sessions will start with a 25-minute class – gradually increasing by 5 minutes a week so we can make sure you’re progressing correctly through the stages of the recovery. Along the way you’ll have a series of daily exercises to do, with additional videos to support you outside of classes.
In the first few weeks we’ll also incorporate a ‘chat’ feature at the end of sessions. We’ll all get to know each other and share our stories and ideas – creating a sense of community as we all work through the challenges left by the virus as a group.
The programme defined
- 6-week programme
- 2 1-hour sessions a week
- a structured programme that progresses slightly each week
- sessions led by our Physiotherapists or Sports Therapists
- progressive home exercise programme
- opportunity to talk to others recovering from Long COVID
Who is the programme for?
The APPI Long COVID programme is for anyone who has any of the above symptoms after contracting the COVID-19 virus.
Is the programme online or in person?
The programme will begin online – available to anyone anywhere in the UK. As restrictions are lifted local programmes will be set up in areas that require this service.
What will I need?
Nothing really! A chair, an exercise mat if you have it, or a towel is fine too. Other than that, just an excitement to get better and regain your fitness and health.
What’s the cost?
The cost of the programme is even less than our standard Pilates classes – as a way to ensure we support you as much as we can.
The 12-class programme costs £160 in total. That’s less than £13 per class (our normal class cost is £15).
